Faster than GM Is Your Market Advantage

I love to keep up to date on the latest news and two hours ago an article came up in the St. Louis Business Journal showing that General Motors Corp. reported losses of $30.9 billion in 2008. Incredible. Here’s a link to the article. The article outlines the plans that GM has to change its strategies by 2014.

Isn’t it a great time to own a small business?

It couldn’t be better! While the big companies are taking 4-6 years to make changes to their businesses, the oportunity for small business owners is wide open to adapt and profit. As the owner of a small business, if you need to make a change, you can just make it, usually in the time it takes to think about it. The change process goes something like this, “I think I need to change something. Hmmm… yep… done.” And the change is made.

As your competition announces the changes that will take years to implement, small business owners like you can make the change immediately and capture a huge share of the market.

These can be prosperous times for the at home entrepreneur, especially those who have decided to take their business online where the marketing is FREE and anyone can compete with the big dogs.

2000% Increase in Sales: 2 Emails, 1 Weekend

Boy, we just had a huge success for working with DIY Surf Gear! DIY Surf Gear is a company that sells plans teaching surfers how to make their own equipment for surfing. They are a relatively new company with no email list and very little traffic. Their website was receiving about 15 visits a day and they didn’t have an email list (they do now, thank goodness).

Anyway, they wanted to make a push over the weeked to move product fast. A 2000% increase in sales for a normal weekend and all they had to do was write 2 emails.

No, it wasn’t a million dollar deal or anything, however, it was a 2000% increase in sales. What could that do for your business in a weekend?

And the magic is, the system can be repeated over and over and over again. It was all done legally, ethically, without spamming, and all the customers were super excited to hand over their money to buy the product.  It was a win, win, win for everyone involved and it can be implemented by any business large or small. We just barely did this over the weekend, so this is breaking stuff! More to come.

By the way if you haven’t already done so, be sure to join my newsletter. No Spam, no junk, and you can automatically unsubscribe any time.

Clinton’s Socks Put To Sleep. . . Front Page?

When I got on my computer this afternoon, I scanned over the news feeds on my RSS reader and at the top of the list on my CNN.com news feed was the headline, “Sock, former Clinton cat, put to sleep.” Holy smokes, Clinton’s cat made the front page of the CNN politics section and the Top Story is a eulogy!

Why? Two reasons: people love their pets and people love their pets. The pet industry is huge. When I was a kid, if you had to get some food for the hamster, you went to the little pet store on the corner. Now, we see these massive PetSmart stores that have everything under the sun for pets.

What can you take away from this as a business owner? With well over 60% of U.S. households owning pets, do you think there might be some opportunity there? Think about how your product or service might relate to pet owners. Discover how what you have to offer is necessary for every pet owner. How does it make their life easier? How will it save them time? How will it bring joy to their family? How will it bring happiness to their pet? How could it foster a strong bond between pet and pet owners?

Have a brainstorm about it and list as many ways to connect with pet owners as you can. No idea is too silly. Consider them all and test some out. The great thing about the internet is all it takes to test out some new marketing is it’s free and just takes a few click of the mouse.

When I was a kid I had a dog, tons of fish, and a pair of hamsters. When there’s an animal in the home, it quickly becomes the center of the family’s life. When to feed the pet, exercise it, walk it, clean it. . . it’s a major part of life. Now that I’m a father myself, my girls are asking for a dog. As soon as Mommy gives in they’ll probably have one and we’ll be prime candidates for your pet owner targeted marketing.

Do I Need Online Computer Backup?

Both you and I could probably give the name of one person for every finger on our right hands that we know has lost everything to a computer crash. Contact lists are lost, spreadsheets, important files, saved email. . . everything gone. In the past, the traditional way of protection your information has been to buy an external hard drive about the size of a dictionary that sits on your desktop or on top of your computer tower and to save important files on that external hard drive in case of a computer meltdown.

If your desk is like mine, real estate for sale in my work area is almost non-existent. I used to have a back up hard drive floating around on it but it has recently been ousted in my attempts eliminate clutter. One way to protect yourself and give yourself peace of mind, is to backup your important files online. There are several companiest that will store your data, photos, music, or whatever online so you can 1) access it anywhere and 2) recover all your important data in the event of a computer failure or theft. The services are definitely affordable. One of the newer companies to provide such services is www.keepit.com.

The keepit program has unlimited storage space so you don’t have to make the decision about what data you are willing to lose and what data is worthy of backing up. The service cost $4.95 per month. In my mind, it’s really a no brainer as far as peace of mind and protection goes. More at www.keepit.com.

What Is Internet Marketing and Can Anyone Do It?

If you ask me, internet marketing is simply using the internet to influence the visitor to take an action. The most common action that internet marketers try and get vistors to do is buy something. A candle maker has a website that sells candles and with their website they either want the visitor to call, go to the physical location, buy online, or join the mailing list. The call to action of a search engine like Google is to get you to click on the ads on the top and right hand colums of the page. The call to action on my blog is to download my audio book for free. If you are attracting visitors and encouraging your visitors to take an action, you are an internet marketer.

Can anyone do it? Yes!

Can you make money with the help of the internet? Yes!

Do you have to know how to make websites? No.

Do you have to understand how search engines work? No.

All you need to do is follow proven systems for generating income. It’s like baking a cake. Just follow the recipe.

What’s the secret? Taking the time to learn the things that you don’t even know you don’t know. Are they complicated? No Way. Take me for example. I’m a surfer who studied Art History in school. I don’t have a technical background, yet, I have a thriving internet business. Anyone can do it, and truth be told, you don’t even need a website to start making money on the internet.
